Ear cropping was originally used to prevent the dog's ears from becoming torn in fights with other dogs or wolves. Today it is performed on certain breeds for cosmetic reasons. In countries were it is still legal, ear cropping is done to make the dog look better for shows and to match the Breed Standard. Boxers can be shown cropped or natural, depending on the owners preference. Although the operation is illegal in England, in America almost all show Boxers are cropped. There is no real purpose other than for looks, but supporters of the operation claim that it helps keep the ears free from mites and prevents infections.

This is about the only valid reason for cropping the ears of a dog.
