An example of competing political parties is in the British House of Commons. Basically, there is the governing party of the Conservatives, who won the last Election. Then comes the Labour Party that is in opposition. Then there are the other parties: The Scottish National Party, the Liberal Democrats, and several other minor parties. Now, if there was not a competition (during the run up to a General Election) the voters would not know which party they want to govern the country for the next five years. Therefore, if a party wants to become the governing party, they must woo the electorate and gain enough votes to form the next government.
