The current standard repair method is using lateral restraint straps. These are galvanised steel strips, which run along the joists, bend perpendicularly and run either up or down the wall. Installation of such straps is a messy process requiring temporary removal of furniture, floorboards and plaster. Even once installation is complete, you are relying on the holding capacity of a wall plug and a screw.
An alternative repair method is using a product similar to Target Fixings' Bow Flex; a piece of stainless steel helical bar installed externally through drilled holes in the masonry into either the end- or side-grain of the joists.
