Manslaughter is the word used for killing another person without intending to do so, but when it happens because of negligence or carelessness. Accidents happen, but reckless carelessness deserves to be punished.

If the killing was intentional, then it is called "murder". "First degree murder" is when the killing is planned; "second degree murder" happens at the spur of the moment, or in times of great anger.
