Rashi commentary explains that the name YHVH refers to God relating to the world in mercy, while Elohim refers to God when He relates to the world in strictness. When the two names are used together (Genesis ch.2), it's the two Divine attributes in conjunction. There are other sources that suggest the word Elohim represents how God is the one true God amongst all the other deities.
It should also be noted that in Biblical Hebrew, God has many names, which are often describing His attributes: the Righteous One, the Faithful One, the Holy One, etc. YHVH is a special name revealed to Moses in the book of Exodus, when Moses, who had been raised by polytheists and people who believed in magic, asked Him what His name was (the Egyptians believed that if you knew a god's special or magical name, you could control him). Instead of giving Moses a magical name, God gave him YHVH-- by most accounts, the initials of the Hebrew verb "to be"-- I am what I am, I was what I was, I will be what I will be. In other words, God wanted Moses to know that another of His attributes was He is eternal and no human being can control Him. To show how sacred YHVH was, to this day, it is not pronounced, and is often replaced in prayer by the word Adonoi (the Lord).
