It has two separate actions, depending on whether both or only one is contracted. Unilateral (only one muscle) contraction gives rise to lateral flexion of the back/vertebral column. Bilateral (both sides) contractions causes depression of the thoracic rib cage (usually during respiration).

The quadratus lumborum is a quadrilateral and irregular shaped muscle in the lower back. It allows for flexion of the vertebral column and also assist in the decompression of the thoracic rib cage.
