It could be said that however militaristic and cruel the Ancient Hellenic peoples were,their aggressively ambitious neighbors within and without Hellas permitted, if not insisted, such behaviour. We know also that Ancient Greeks had complex music, historiography, mathematics and to some degree science. It is somewhat hard to say, this considered, that the Ancient Greek society was uncivilized-- much easier to say that it, like most lands of the period, was a quite harsh and impetuous kind of place ot live.
