In the past hundred years there are two communities which have claimed to be the "Radish Capital of America." IN the early 1900s Long Beach, Mississippi was well known for it's long three to four inch style radishes, presented in taverns much in the same way that peanuts are today. However, when prohibition was passed in the 1920s the tart, and sometimes pithy, "Long Beach" radish fell out of favor, and the sweeter, button radish, which was better suited for stews and soups became more popular. Long Beach had originally claimed the title "Radish Capital of America" but in 1979 McClure, Ohio, who is currently the largest producer of radishes in the country, Began to boast the title. Long Beach, wanting their history preserved, informally contested the title. McClure decided to decline the title and now boast "Radish Capital of the World," Preserving the "Radish Capital of America" for it's original holder. When entering McClure there is a sign which reads "Radish Capital of the World" and this boast has never been contested. In short answer, Long Beach Mississippi still holds the title, though a commercial presence for radishes has disappeared; McClure Ohio is currently the largest producer of radishes in the country, the defacto radish capital of America.
