The reasons for the plants temperatures are because the farther they are from the sun the colder they get. Since the sun is the only nearby energy source. Also, as energy travels, it transfers energy to the environment. It is the same principle as if you shoot a bullet. If the bullet did not deliver energy to the enviroment, it would never loose propulsion, and thus travel indefinatly. The longer the planet is from the sun, the less energy is transfered to the planets mass.
