He won the election with 3.8% more votes than his nearest opponent, Democrat John Sharp, becoming George W. Bush's second Lt. Governor. So when George W. Bush resigned on 21 December 2000 due to winning the U.S. Presidential Election, Rick Perry automatically became Governor.
Gov. Perry ran for reelection in 2002, and he won with 44.6% more votes than his nearest opponent, Democrat Tony Sanchez.

In December 2008, Gov. Perry broke the record for the longest time in office of any Texas Governor to date.
In 2010, Gov. Perry ran for reelection again, and he won with 30.0% more votes than his nearest opponent, Democrat Bill White.
There are no term limits in Texas, so Gov. Perry may continue to run for reelection as often as he wishes. However, on 8 July 2013 Gov. Perry announced his intention to retire when his current term ends in January 2015.
