One reason to not believe that Montezuma welcomed Cortes is that "Thus Moctezuma'sassertion that he and his predecessors (those who came before) were just safeguarding the rulership of the Mexica empire in anticipation of Cortes's arrival is not to be taken seriously."

Was Hernan Cortes a ruthless leader?

Hernando Cortes is ruthless in many ways. He is ruthless because he had no mercy on the Aztecs and his soldiers. For example when he first arrived the Aztecs treated him well because there leader Montezuma thought that the Europeans were gods. They gave him gifts such as gold. This only made Cortes more eager to find the source of the gold. This showed that he was ruthless because they thought the gold would make him happy and leave but he decided to come anyway and he showed little mercy on them. He was also ruthless to his soldiers because he ordered the ships to be sunk so his soldiers cannot turn back after Cortes decided to march inland. Cortes was then treated as a guest but he was driven out by Aztec nobles and half of his army was killed or wounded. From this Cortes decided to begin a siege of Tenochtitlan. He was ruthless to the Aztecs because he showed no mercy on them since he kept sending soldiers until most of there warriors were killed or captured. Also once Montezuma had died there was a new ruler who was the nephew of Montezuma, The new ruler named Cuauhtémoc defended the city, however Hernando Cortes still continued his ruthless ways. For instance after 3 months the city fell to Cortes. He then had Cuauhtémoc executed which is another reason why Cortes is ruthless. He could have justified his actions to conquer the Aztecs after they drove him out by killing half of his men or wounding them. Clearly Hernando Cortes was ruthless in many ways.

Hernán Cortes sailed for Spain both because he was Spanish by birth (and therefore harbored loyalty to his fatherland) and because King Carlos V of Spain agreed to fund his voyages. Mostly it was the latter reason.
