A healthy diet consists of a healthy combination of foods in all the food groups. These include vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, proteins and oils.

Vegetables:

Get plenty of these; preferably unsalted and not fried. Try to vary the types of vegetables you eat.

Fruits:

Like vegetables, these contain healthy vitamins and antioxidants. They also have fructose, so don't overdo it.

Grains:

Get plenty of these. Whole grain products such as whole wheat breads, brown rice and oatmeal are the healthy types.

Dairy:

The calcium in milk is an essential part of a balanced diet. Dairy products including cheese and yogurt also count towards your dairy needs.

Proteins:

This group includes meat (preferably lean), beans, fish, nuts and seeds. Try to eat a combination of each of these foods throughout the week.

Oils:

Oils play an important role in the food pyramid because they allow us to consume unsaturated (healthy) fat. There are also certain foods that count towards your oil goal such as almonds, salmon, sardines and avocados. Olive oil is very healthy.

Also: plenty of moderate aerobic exercise; and avoid junk food. Preferably only a small amount of sugar, and little added salt and processed foods. Eat 3 moderately-portioned meals/day, and do not skip breakfast.

Avoid crash diets, diet pills etc. Avoid fatty cuts of meat. Walk as much as possible. Bicycling and swimming are good too.

More guidelines:

Don't concentrate on specific foods so much as on a balanced, healthy diet plus exercise. Plenty of moderate exercise rather than intense exercise, which can damage your joints.

Good nutrition means eating what your body needs, while ingesting as few harmful things as possible.

This will vary somewhat from one person to another; and I don't believe that there's any universal diet that can be prescribed for everyone. Avoid best-sellers with their perennial fad diets. And think twice before using any dietary supplements or weight-loss pills.

Also...whenever you feel queasy, nauseous, constipated or otherwise not completely well, try to remember what you've eaten over the last several hours or the last day. This is one method of adjusting one's food habits.
