You will have to practice sliding to know what this distance is for you. It is different for everyone. I started my slide when i was about 6or 7 feet away form the base.
It means your airbag probably will not deploy if you are in an accident. Have it checked out right away.
If the problem has gone away it should reset itself. Airbag systems are under warranty regardless of mileage forever on most vehicles. Have the dealer check it out to make sure you don't end up with an airbag in your lap when you least expect it.

If you hear thunder in the distance you should find a safe place get a flashlight and stay as far away as possible from water.
