Basically, Britain wanted to incorporate the Transvaal and the Orange Free State into a federation under British control. The Boers did not want to lose control. Negotiations between them failed and Transvaal and the Orange Free State declared war on Britain. The tensions at least partially, or perhaps mostly, had to do with gold mines in those areas.

transvaal means (trans=across) + (Vaal=is the name or the main tributary of the Orange River in South Africa) Today the Vaal river forms the boundry between the two provinces of the Orange Free State and Gauteng (formely called the Transvaal -- the land across the Vaal River)
The Orange Free State was immediately north of Cape Colony, once you had crossed the Orange River. Transvaal was north of OFS, once you crossed the Vaal River.
