There is no specific relationship between steel drums and religion. However, the instrument was invented in Trinidad and Tobago (and called steelpans there and in most of the world) as a form of musical accompaniment to the Carnival celebrations.
This Carnival takes place during the pre-Lenten period, as it does in other places such as Rio and New Orleans.
The instrument is now used at all times to play all types of music, including as accompaniment to choirs and during church services.
