A nun must devote their life to poverty, they must care for the poor and sick. They must pray and attend to the church regularly.
Every Order is different. Also, there is a big difference between a "nun" and a "sister". Which can be kind of confusing, as both of them are called Sister. Nuns are enclosed in monasteries, sisters live in convents or in the world. All sister usually take promises, nuns make vows. Most sisters have three promises where in they promises chastity, poverty, and obedience. The vow of poverty means that they can not own anything, ever again, everything is the property of the order. They promises absolute obedience to God in everything, with immediate obedience to their superiors. Nuns in the Benedictine tradition take vows of Obedience, Stability, and Conversion of Manners - which includes the three that sisters take, plus they vow to remain in their monastery, and to live as nuns. Their particular responsibilities beyond those vows are whatever their particular charism (the reason their order was founded). Most monasteries of nuns were founded for prayer, and their first responsibility is the Office, which is a series of up to eight different prayer services a day: Matins (Night prayer); Lauds (Morning Prayer), Prime (dawn), Terce (9 am), Sext (noon), None (3 pm), Vespers (evening prayer), and Compline (Bedtime). Plus daily Mass, and whatever their particular order does to earn their income. Some nuns have perpetual adoration, some bake altar breads, some give retreats to lay folk, some do needlework, making altar cloths, vestments, etc. Some write books, etc.
A nun is a woman who has taken special vows committing her to a religious life. She may be an ascetic who voluntarily chooses to leave mainstream society, founded on the belief that each person is called by God to a vocation that enriches the individual and benefits the world for the greater good of mankind.
You observe your vows of celibacy, poverty and obedience. You obey the specific rule adopted by your particular Order.
"nun" is a palindrome that means 'a religious woman'.
A nun can stop being a nun whenever she wants to do so.
A nun is not really a nun if she is not officially recognized by the Catholic Church as a member of a religious order or if she does not take religious vows. Additionally, a person who pretends to be a nun for personal gain or deception purposes is not truly a nun.
