The end result was a shortening of the war by months, at almost nil casualties. And a new style of military campaigning, now called Total War.

Furthermore it represented the successful realisation of a decisive strategic manoeuvre aiming to take from the back the Confederate Eastern Front.

General Lee, subject to a heavy siege by Grant's army, was practically immobilized there and had no possibility to displace troops to prevent Sherman's army to reach that task.
