If you purchase a horse breed book such as horses and ponies by corinne clark, they mention the tempurament of the certain breed which could help you decide which breed is right for you. To me, most people depend on the tempurament that they can handle with for many years in a very strong bond between themselves and their horse.

Well any horse would be fine but if your child wants to be able to put on the saddle,do up girths etc then the perfect height would be 14 hands high because then when your child grows it will still fit the horse :)

Typically, I would start online or talk to an experienced trainer whom you trust. Some good websites to look at would be Equinenow.com, Equine.com, and Dreamhorse.com. Mostly, I would tell you to stick to private sales, as horses for sale at auctions can have defects masked by things like food switches and drugs. The horse perfect for you will feel right, and he should be sweet and loving. You will know what horse is for you. Good luck!
To turn a horse to the right you have to open your right hand slightly away from the horse's neck and gently nudge the horse's left side with the heel of your foot.
