You should not use laundry detergent in your dishwasher. It produces too many suds and the dishes will not rinse correctly.
Putting a cup or two of plain white vinegar in the dishwasher and running it without soap is a very good and inexpensive way to clean and freshen the dishwasher.

Sure! Should not be a problem. Unless your dishwasher is the type you can put dishes in that still have food on them. I would rinse them first if that is the case.
Modern dishwasher "soap" is actually a no rinse detergentfirst developed for the US military for use in mess hall dishwashers to help reduce the incidence of food poisoning in troops. Never use soap in a dishwasher!
