There technically is a specifgic ritual one follows to actually "become" Buddhist...although many would say becoming Buddhist is the same as becoming awake or becoming human... It is quite simple...and you don't need a lot of ritualistic stuff attached to it unless that suits you. One recites what is called the Triple Treasure(Triratna) of Buddhism. The Taking of Refuge...Refuge in this sense accepting the sincerety and truth of the teachings you are choosing to follow1. Buddham saranam gacchami-- To the Buddha I go for refuge!2. Sangham saranam gacchami-- To the Sangha I go to for refuge!3. Dhammam saranam gacchami-- To the Dharma I go for refuge! This puja (ceremony) can be done ornately..in temple with attendents and witnesses, or it can be done in front of your home altar with your family and pets...it is all reliant on your wishes.
