This practice is now prohibited by law. In the past a wife would willingly, and in some cases forced to, die after the death of her husband. This ritual was carried out so that she would not be harassed by other men. Because in those days wives were protected by their husbands.

∙ 9y agoSati, or suttee, is when a woman in certain Asian countries sets herself on fire as part of her husband's funeral. Sometimes these women take a vow to do this when their husbands die. In a few cases, there might be pressure or force to do this, particularly if they were judged to be a "bad wife," under the justification that this purifies the soul. It is likely done out of feelings of guilt as well. Reformed Hinduism condemns this practice.
