Novell's Netware was around before Microsoft got into server software market. It was not until the 2000 that Microsoft wrote it's own version of network authentication software called "Active Directory" to compete with Novell's NDS and eDirectory.
It really depends because Microsoft has a huge number of products. Of course they are mostly known for Windows, but they have much more available. Office, Xbox, Live, MSN, online services, server and tools, programming languages, Windows Phone, gaming, Bing, and more.
Each product and service they have has a different competitor. For Xbox, I would say Sony and Nintendo, but for Windows Server, it is Unix and Linux. For online services, Google is a major competitor. For Windows Phone, it is Android. Bing would be Google. The list goes on.
Many people will indeed say Macintosh, and they are a competitor in operating systems, but Microsoft does so much more than just Windows.
I can say this with certainly because I have worked for Microsoft several times.

There are a few operating systems that compete with microsoft, they are Apple's Mac OS X, Linux, and Unix.
