This procedure is called hot lashing. Pull one side valve cover and back off the rocker arm until clacking is heard, then tighten until it goes away. After that add an additional half turn to pre-load the plunger in the lifter. If you have an extra valve cover you can cut the top off of it and it will keep from making quite the mess. Also if you are not using roller rockers you can buy oil deflectors at napa or autozone. You better keep a couple quarts of oil on hand as it will make a mess. You can also cold lash the valves with the engine off, just make sure all adjustments are done with the lifter on the base circle of the cam.

Cold lashing is done when the intake valve begins to open, adjust the exhaust valve. When the exhaust valve reaches maximium lift and starts to close adjust the intake. Loosen the rocker until you can spin the pushrod easily. Tighten the rocker until you start to feel resistance, this point is called zero lash. After zero lash add an additional half turn of preload.
