the pianos role in popular music to just simply play a harmony to the melody it has no leading role in music, except for harmonic fills, and to keep time. through playing whole chords in major or minor tonalities, the piano keeps a solid pulse through out the whole song/section its played for. This instrument simply sets the mood for the piece, ie skinny love by birdy, in this piece she lets the piano help strengthen her voice and the mood/tone in which she's trying to set, and helping get the message across.
