What is the role of the premier in Australia?

A Premier is the highest elected official in a state. Australia is broken up into 6 states; Queensland, New South wales, Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia and western Australia. Each one of these states has a Premier it is very similar to a U.S. State Govenor.
