The role of an area manager is basically to manage all of the stores in a particular area to make sure they're up to company standards. They make sure all managers have what they need in terms of inventory and employees. They also make sure the stores are in presentable conditions for customers.
A territory manager is going to have the widest area to cover as they are the people that also control the area manager and the zonal manager. The area manager might deal with a group of stores and the zonal manager might have just one store.
regional manager
An "Area Manager" by definition will have a geographical area to cover for their company. They will in normal cases have a group of managers spread across that area, who report to them on the business undertaken. I.E. In a retail environment an area manager might have 25 large stores under them, and in each store a manager reporting to that area manager.
Regional sales managers usually cover a larger area than area sales managers. In some organisations a number of area sales managers will report to a regional sales manager. Each area manager is responsible for his area but the regional manager is responsible for the performance of the region as a whole. In other organisations job titles can be quite arbitrary and of no real significance.
an area manager for a restuarant company earns between $60,000 to $90,000 including bonus
Area Manager is a member of management team, responsible for the profitable operations of all ranches under his control.
I'll use the country as India to explain the difference. Regional manager is the head of a region, say North Region - where he is in-charge of the entire operations and under him there could be many area managers who take care of the area specific operations like in UP-west area, Chandigarh area, etc. The regional manager does not get involve in the small day-to-day issues and manages the entire region and reports to the HQ. The area manager reports to the regional manager and his KRA includes the area specific targets, unlike regional manager who is answerable to HQ if the regional performance is not good.
