What happened to the Cherokee when the settlers arrived?

When Christopher Columbus arrived in America, he thought he was in India, which was where he was trying to go. That's how they got the name "Indians". The settlers pushed all Native Americans out of New England and westward. That is why you don't see many Native American tribes in New England anymore.

Where are Cherokee tribes found?

Cherokee Tribes are found in the mountains of North Carolina , Tennessee , Georgia and , I believe , Kentucky and are known as the Eastern Band. Others are found in Oklahoma and are known as the Western Band. Cherokee are found in Oklahoma because of being driven from their lands in the east to Oklahoma on The Trail Of Tears where four thousand or more Cherokee died. The removal was part of the white mans press to attain land , at any cost , from the Native Americans.

Were Cherokee Indians bad?

Cherokee of North Georgia were farmers and wore the clothes of many Europeon immigrants. When they were going to be moved by the Indian removal at they organized as a nation and then were removed by treaty to Oklahoma. Other than reacting to property being taken under false pretensions and fighting legally, including law suits going all the way to the supreme court, the Cherokee were willing to assimilate the European culture.

What is Oklahoma and Indian territory?

Oklahoma is the state created from an area called The Indiam Territory. The Indian Territory was where Indians were collected and punished for just being Indians. They were expected to change their way of life to suit the white mans way and become (civilized). This was done by isolating them from family and their tribal lands. Indians from all areas of the of the United States were herded to the territory. See Trail of Tears, Cherokee; Chief Joseph, Nez Pierce. At the same time the United States was killing and suppressing Indians, Canada was willing to negotiate and keep their promises to the Indians. Canada never had the need to fight the Indians the way the U.S. did. The North American Indians recognised the International Border between Canada and the U.S. Knowing that they would be killed or transported to reservations for just being Indian. If they could cross into Canada they would be allowed to stay and be taken care of.

What Cherokee Indians houses were made of?

Many Eastern Cherokee Native Americans were skilled craftsmen/tradesmen, like builders and brick/stone masons. Hopefully those skills continued when the Eastern tribes were forced to relocate West (1820's - 1840's) While many homes were simple wooden structures, prior to the tragic Trail of Tears more and more homes were being constructed of bricks and stones. The Cherokee Nation was the first Native American Tribe to have its own written language, with the alphabet being developed by Sequoya who died in the early to mid 1840's I think.
