if you are at school, they will tell you what to do. if you are at home, the best thing to do is get under a door way, a very safe and stable part of anyones house. if you are in public, go to your car and hide under the dashboared, its very hard, and should be able to stand big things falling. if you are in a building, go under a desk, table, etc.
the safest place during an earthquake is probably in the highest place you can be

very tightly packed soil and not on mud or fill. you should build on bedrock
Depending on what sort of house you live in under a door way is the safest place, as the building is structured around doors or possibly in your basement if you live in a house that's basement goes into the ground. I know it may sound freaky, but the basement is the safest place to be because of the concrete.
The safest place to hide during a tornado is either a basement or a tub with a mattress over top of it. But for an earthquake it is safe to hide inside of your home is in a doorframe or under a desk that is against the wall. The best hiding spot is proably outside and away from trees or buildings. At least outside you won't get crushed by your own house or someone else's.
The safest thing to do is to go to an underground shelter such as a basement or cellar.

Pull over and get into the nearest ditch a depression in the ground. Do not seek shelter under an overpass.
The safest way to protect you when an earthquake strikes is to crouch beneath a sturdy table or desk and hold onto it. If no desk or table is available, crouch against an inner wall, away from the outside of a building. Then, cover your head and neck with your arms. Stay away from windows, mirrors, wall hangings, and furniture that might fall over.
The safest area during an earthquake if you are inside is under something sturdy (like a table) along an interior wall. The safest place outside is away from power lines and buildings.
