I would like to make a suggestion--rather than be thinking about having a "safe type of metal" to use in a ring--step away from the thought of him wearing his ring in unsafe conditions.
I have worked in places where wearing rings would be dangerous, so I would remove my rings. Better to remove the rings than the finger with the ring on it. I would suggest that you might want to look into an easy way for him to have his wedding band with him, but not on his finger.
You might think about having a chain, where he can attach the ring, and wear under his shirt (so the chain wouldn't get caught). Or how about a protective pouch that he could put the ring in and put the pouch in his pocket.
Make the alternative to wearing the ring just as special as the wedding band is to the both of you, so that when he removes and puts on the ring, he can think about you as he is doing it.
No injuries have been reported.
