Fire extinguisher
This is entirely dependant on the skills of the individual, the type of fire, and the resources at hand. In any case, the fire department (911) should be called in the event of any fire, whether it has been extinguished or not.
In the event of a grease fire, or fire on the stove - the safest, easiest method of extinguishment would be to turn off the heat source(stove/oven), then put a lid on the pot, or cover the pot with a non-combustible item. This will cut off the oxygen to the fire, and the fire will go out. If this cannot be done, a fire extinguisher can be used to put the fire out. Ensure that you have the appropriate class of extinguisher (Class ABC, or Class B or K for a grease fire), and are familiar with the proper operation of a fire extinguisher.
In the event of a small fire in your house, a fire extinguisher or water is usually your best line of defense. Keep in mind that if the fire involves flammable liquids, DO NOT use water to try and put the fire out, this will only make thinks worse.
ONLY attempt to fight the fire if you have the proper resources at hand, and a means of escape from the situation if you are unable to put out the fire. Remember, no property is worth the loss of a life. Things can be replaced and rebuilt - people cannot.
Gasoline is of course very dangerous but can be managed effectively with a foam extinguisher. The foam suffocates the fire and starves it of the oxygen in needs to thrive. Water based extinguishers will just move the gasoline around and spread the fire. Different extinguisher types are color-coded appropriately. If you do not have a foam fire extinguisher at your house, the only safe option if you notice a small gas fire is to evacuate and phone the fire brigade.
