Well, I just got my braces off yesterday (yay!), so I'll tell you what happened to me yesterday at my appointment:

  1. One of the doctors told me to relax and lay my head back on the chair, and he told me I would feel a pop every time he removes a bracket. He got this metal tool and he quickly snapped the brackets off of my teeth. Now, I have to warn you, some brackets were not that easy to break. There was more glue on some of my brackets than the other ones, so it kind of hurt when the orthodontist "popped" those (the ones with more glue) off. He had to put more pressure on them. But the other brackets with less glue popped out fine without pain. Afterwards, my mouth felt so empty without the brackets.
  2. After this ordeal, my main orthodontist--the main doctor--got this little drill that was supposed to melt off the remaining glue off my teeth. I'll be warning you that the air that was coming from the drill was warmer than I expected, so it might be useful if you told your orthodontist that your teeth are sensitive (unless they're not).
  3. They took X-rays of my new teeth.
  4. Later, they had taken photos of my teeth (to compare them to my old, crooked teeth photos?), and then they took impressions of my teeth, which basically means that they modeled my teeth for the retainers.
  5. Finally, FINALLY, they gave me my retainers. Now, I'm talking with a lisp. Fortunately, a lot of people say that I'll get used to them in a week or so.

Hope this helped! :)
