Very little. Athens had a direct democracy, where the citizens met fortnightly and made decisions which the Council implemented. Today we have representative democracy where the people elect representatives to a parliament which makes the decisions on their behalf between elections.
They are not. There was only one city state in ancient Greece (Athens) that was very briefly a very limited form of democracy (only freeborn upperclass men). All other city states of ancient Greece were kingdoms or other authoritarian government systems.
It isn't

Athens was a Greek city-state. Athens is considered to be the Cradle of Democracy. Only males who had completed their military training had the right to vote. That, of course, excluded women. When speaking of Greece, it is about the entire area of what is now modern Greece.
It was located on the Agean sea port in GreeceAthens, today, is still located in the same location as ancient Athens. The various temples and sites can still be found in modern Athens.
Ancient Greece - particularly Athens - was where democracy was first introduced. All the male citizens of Athens could vote for their leaders. Although this did not include women or slaves, this was the bulk of the male population of the city. The word democracy, in fact, comes from Greek: Demos meaning people and kratia being the word for government.

Athenian democracy was not at all the same concept as modern democracy, so therefore there was no democratically elected ruler, but rather a council of all those eligible who made decisions on anything and everything.
Democracy developed in the ancient Greek city-state of Athens through the general will of the citizens and also the intentional effort of such dynamic individuals as Solon and Pericles, among others. It was both a direct- and a limited-democracy, with each full citizen having access to the functions and decision-making power of the society yet, at the same time, with only a small percentage of the overall population meriting the rights of full citizenship.
Because Ancient Greece did have the same technology as Ancient Rome as Ancient Rome were technologically advanced. Ancient Rome had a stronger army and a more stronger and structured democracy.
