In the 1800's they just called it rabies like we do now Hydrophobia is synonymous with rabies.
Since kinkajous are mammals in the same family as raccoons, I would have to assume they can contract rabies if exposed. Does anyone have any scientific data to support this hypothesis?

Louis Pasteur invented the vaccine for rabies in 1885.
If a healthy nerve cell effectively blocks the rabies virus from entry, you would not get rabies. However, there is no scientific evidence that this happens, so please don't pin your hopes on this if you are exposed to the rabies virus. Once you are exposed, you need post-exposure prophylaxis to keep yourself from dying of rabies.
