The cow's digestive system is an anaerobic fermentation system because it relies on bacteria, protozoa and fungi to break down and digest the plant material consumed by the cow in order for the cow to obtain necessary nutrients for bodily function. Cows are known as ruminants, for the reason mentioned above, and because they regurgitate partly-digested plant matter and rechew it during their resting periods.
