The protocol used for web-browsing is the Hypertext Transfer Protocol, otherwise known as HTTP. The secure version of HTTP is Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol, otherwise knows as HTTPS.

HTTP stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol and is used to transfer the data of a website from the server on which the website is stored to the browser (i.e. Mozilla Firefox) of the user requesting the webpage and back. The "http://" prefix in a URL is used to tell the browser which protocol (in this case HTTP) to use. HTTPS is a secure version of HTTP (S meaning Secure) in which all of your transmitted data is encrypted using SSL. It has the prefix "https://"
The website will establish the secure connection. If you are using the Safari browser a padlock will appear in the top right corner (most browsers will display some form of lock or key) when you visit a secure page. The page address will often start with HTTPS:// for a secure page rather than the normal HTTP://
Secure site versus not secure site.
Https is a more secure. Http is not necessarily secure at all. FTP is used to connect to a file server while HTTP connects to a web server.

https does not 'become' a secure protocol, it 'is' a secure protocol. however, it is 'common practice to intially use the http protocol and 'switch to' or 'use' the https protocol for 'secure' or 'encrypted' communication. information exchanged using the http protocol is exchanged in the 'clear' or using 'plain' text while information exchanged using the https protocol is 'encrypted' (using any number of encryption and or signing mechanisms)prior to exchange. https is an industry agreed upon standard that references the 'secure exchange' of http information.
