Currently there is no space ship that is searching for life on other planets. However, there is an unmanned vehicle (the Curiosity rover) which is currently on Mars looking for signs of life, previous and current.

Has life on other planets evolved in the same way to be similar to life on earth and why should other planets not be populated by humans from earth?

A space ship could take us to any other planet in our solar system (planets that revolve around our sun) within a few months. However, we know that no advanced life forms have evolved on any other planet. Only the planet Mars is sufficiently like the Earth to have a chance of evolving life at all. Astronomers, using ever more sensitive instruments now know that there are many other planets in our galaxy. Until recently, the only planets discovered were extremely large ones that could not possibly support life anything like life on earth. Astronomers are now at the point that they can identify planets as small as our own earth. However, knowing a planet is there is different from knowing whether anyone can live there and whether any advanced life has evolved there. No doubt, with so many planets in our local galaxy, advanced forms of life must have evolved, but they do not need to look any thing like us, or even think like us. There are practical and moral problems with colonising other planets. No other planet in our solar system can be populated in the same way as the earth - people could only live within safe enclosures. Planets outside our solar system would take years just to get there, and as long to return. Any long term population on another planet that has a slightly different gravity, slightly different light source, different length of day or any other subtle differences is likely to result in evolutionary changes that eventually lead to a new species of humans. Would we want to do this? And why would we populate another planet anyway?
