Virtually every word contains a vowel, either A, E, I, O, U or a Y or W that makes a vowel sound, as in rhythm and myrrh (Y sounds like I) and cwm and crwth (W sounds like OO).

The exception is in onomatopoeia words such as brr, shh, zzz, and psst, which imitate sounds made with the teeth, lips, or nose. And the unspecified ordinal number nth. (Both nth and psst are dictionary words.)

Many languages have one-letter words with no vowels, e.g. Russian "v" (meaning "with").

An English word would be "by".
