Relics are important to Catholics for a variety of reasons. I believe the most important reason is the inspiration that comes from the relic itself. The thought of having something that reminds you of the Saint - who gave his life for his beliefs (St. Peter), his virtues (St. Benedict), or persisted in a Holy Aspiration (St. Rita of Cascia) - is precious. And if used properly, can make one more holy.
Relics also have power. The power to heal and to cure. This is one example of the power of relics from The Bible.
And as a man was being buried, lo, a marauding band was seen and the man was cast into the grave of Eli'sha; and as soon as the man touched the bones of Eli'sha, he revived, and stood on his feet. II Kings 13:21
One must remember that the object itself is not "magical" and it, in and of itself, cannot cure. It is the belief or the Faith (Mark 10:52), of the individual who uses the relic that heals, cures, or inspires them.
Relics, and their veneration, are a form of popular piety (CCC 1674) that has been around for a long time.
On a personal note, I have touched my Rosary to a relic of the True Cross and when I pray the Sorrowful Mysteries - often I am moved to tears when it comes to the Crucifixion of our Lord- both because of the self-sacrifice and because I have a relic of the Tree upon which He died in my hands…how much closer to the Lord can one get than that?
