The mediastinum is not an organ with a function. It is the space in the center of the chest between the lungs. It contains:

-the heart and some major blood vessels

-the trachea and initial branches of the airways (primary bronchi)

-the thymus

-the esophagus

-the nerve that controls the diaphragm (the phrenic nerve)

-the nerve that provides parasympathetic innervation to the organs (the vagus nerve)

-the main return of the lymph to the blood circulation (the thoracic duct) plus a lot of lymph nodes.
