The year 1066 was the year that Harold II of England defeated the forces of Hardrada and Tostig of Norway, preventing England from becoming one of the Scandanavian countries. It was also the year when William, Duke of Normandy successfully invaded England and became King William I after his victory at The Battle of Hastings when Harold II was killed.

Many British historians count the period between 1066 and the end of The Wars of the Roses in 1485 as "The Middle Ages" or "The Medieval Period."

England was ruled by King Harold. England was invaded by King William (the Conqueror) & King Canute
of Denmark. Harold defeated Canute at the battle of Stamford Bridge, then hearing of William's landing in the south, marched to Hastings where he in turn was defeated (and killed by an arrow in the eye). Hence 3 kings.

1066 was the year that changed the course of British History.

On the 14th October 1066 The Battle of Hastings was fought between the English led by King Harold II and the French led by William Duke of Normandy. The winner would be rewarded with the crown of England.

The significance of this to the English is that it is the last time a foreign power invaded and conquered England.

English history changed from the influence of the Heptarchy, Vikings invasions, and Anglo saxon control when William of Normandy invaded England in 1066. With no legitimate heir to the throne a scramble for power was about to begin between three different individuals: William of Normandy who claimed the throne was his as a cousin of Edward, Harold Godwinson who claimed the throne through the Heptarchies approval as brother in law to Edward, and Harold Hardrada who claimed the right to the throne of England through Canute and his reign in England. While William was preparing to invade England, Harold Hardrada took advantage of Harold Godwinson's focus on the southern English channel to invade England in the north. Godwinson had to take his troops north to meet the advancing Vikings invasion. In late 1066 Harold Godwinson defeated Harold Hardrada at the Battle of Stamford Bridge while Norman forces under William were landing in the south of England. Marching straight through anticipating an attack on London, Harold Godwinson returned to meet William at the infamous Battle of Hastings where an arrow through the eye of Harold ended the Anglo Saxon attempt to defeat William. William of Normandy became King William I of England and brought the French influence to the island. Conflict between the Angles, Saxons, and now Normans for power in England continued for centuries but the Vikings never threatened the English again. Recorded on the famous Bayeux Tapestry are the events leading up to the invasion by William. And William's Domesday Book gives us a survey of England under his rule.

In the year 1215, at Runnymede, King John was compelled by the Barons in arms to sign the Magna Charta. It was the first step on the way of the Constitution.
