Visual art has been used throughout the centuries to convey ideas, stories, emotions, and messages in a different way then through traditional text.

Religion is a common theme in early art. Cave painting depict the fertility Goddess Venus, Egyptians often carved idols of their Gods for their temples and tombs, and later the Greeks and Romans would carve beautiful majestic statues of their dieties.

In the middle ages, The Bible was written in Latin and could not be read and understood by the general public. Stained glass windows in cathedrals were therefore often used to illustrate images of heaven, hell, and Biblical stories like Noahs Ark.

Romans also used art on a political level; carving busts of their military leaders so the mass public could identify with their government officials.

In modern society, art is used to revolutionize the way people view the world.

"The purpose of art is to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable."

Art is also expanding to embrace a variety of media. Art is no longer limited to "paintings, carvings, and drawings" but has come to recognize the value of collage, drawing, etching, clay, digital, and multimedia pieces.

Art is communication and is significant in all of its forms.
