Rome was not on the sea and relied on the cities of Puteoli and Ostia. Ostia was a port at the mouth of the Tiber and Puteoli was also a chief Italian port on the Bay of Naples.
Ancient Roman warehouses were long 2-3 storey row buildings, made of brick with cavernous interiors. There is a website under Ostia Antica where you are able to see plans and reconstructions of the port and warehouse facilities.
It was Ostia. The actual port, which was called Portus, was to its north, past the other bank of the river.

Ostia may refer to: * Ostia Antica, a township and port of ancient Rome * Ostia(town), a modern township (also called Ostia Lido or Lido di Ostia) on the Tyrrhenian Sea coast, near Rome, Italy. Usually, when modern Roman people say Ostia they refer to the modern town, not the nearby archaeological site. It can also refer to either of two modern districts of Rome: * Ostia(modern district),roughly co-terminous with Ostia (town) * Ostia Antica(district) (originally known as Gregoriopolis)
Ostia is located on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Rome, Italy and is famous for the Ostia Antica which is a large archaeological site that was the location of a harbour city of Ancient Rome.
Ostia Antica does not really have a 'political history'. What is did have was a political importance: it was the harbour city of the capital of the Roman Empire, and practically all of the food necessary to feed the citizens of Rome came in through this harbour. Times of food shortage invariably were followed by political unrest and often by the downfall of the political figures responsible for keeping Rome well-fed.
Ostia Antica is the ancient Roman port at the mouth of the Tiber River. It is one of the early colonies established by Rome in a conquered territory.
