Depends on what you plan on towing. You can buy a 1 7/8 ", 2", or 2 5/16" balls. The 2" ball is the most common for most applications. The shank length and diameter is also important. The load weight is critical and goes from 2,000 to 30,000 lbs. So it basically depends on what you are going to tow. Any good RV dealer will be able to assist you in determining exactly what you need.
Install a receiver on the truck and then purchase a drop hitch of your choice. Receiver will cost you around $125 and the drop hitch around $35 with ball. A receiver type hitch is the only way to go. Towing off the bumper is a bad idea.

You can't repair worn out ball joints. Replace them with new ones.
The ball hitch and coupler must be the same size.
They are on the tie rods, ball joints, and the trac bar.
