Pain and discomfort are part and parcel of getting the cartilage pierced with a piercing gun. The piercing gun user knows that they are not allowed to pierce ear cartilage with a piercing gun. Properly done cartilage piercing done by a professional body piercer would have been healed by now. The swelling is due to the stud backing being too close to the skin and not allowing the piercing to drain or breath properly.

no. if you are not prone to irritation or infection you should be ok. Many people do though, because they are not sure how they're cartilage will react to a strange metal and they just want to be on the safe side. cartilage piercings are also not changed as often as earlobe piercings and so people like to choose a fancier stud or ring.

Depends on the ring. If it's a stud then you change it like any other ring. If its captive ball or something like that then, well with mine, you have to pull the sides apart until the ball pops out.

Very quickly. You're not even meant to change the jewellery until 3 months, so it wont be healed properly yet. As it is cartilage and there is no blood, when you take the stud out the hole will start to close immediately and it may hurt to get the stud in after a few minutes, so it would probably only take about a week or so?

definitely a stud, they're easier to sleep in, talk on the phone, and they cant be easily ripped out, accidently, you can get much more sizes, shapes and colours, that's why the peircer will recommend a stud, usually a la Bret.

Is a hoop or stud better for cartilage piercing?
in my opinion a hoop is better because it doesn't hurt as much as a stud. the hoop makes it easier to sleep on and talk on the phone with its also less painful well i think definitely a stud cause it doesnt get caught in things and obviously is near impossible to get ripped out by accident, if usibng approprite size, but don't use ones too small as if played with they can got through the hole... and it hurts!
