What is the soonest that you can do a pregnancy test after ovulation?

Most early pregnancy tests will indicate that you can take the test "5 days before your missed period," however, this is based on the standard 28 day cycle with ovulation at cycle day 14. Thus, the early pregnancy tests can be taken 9 days after ovulation (if you know when that occurred), regardless of when your period normally starts.

However, this answer comes with a few BIG caveats:

(1) Many women do not have standard cycles. Even if your cycles are 28 days long, you might be ovulating before or after day 14. So, if you don't know when you ovulated, it can be difficult to tell exactly when you should take the test.

(2) The tests get more accurate the more days past ovulation you are, as Hcg build up in your bloodstream. Thus, false negatives are more likely closer to ovulation. This makes it more economical to test after you missed your period and maybe sense some other symptoms (like tender breasts), or at 12-14DPO if you know when you ovulated. This also means that you should not drink/smoke until you get your period. You can still be pregnant with a negative early test.

(3) Miscarriages are very common in the first 14 days after conception. If you think that it would be difficult for you emotionally to experience this loss, it might be better to wait a few more days and take the test after your missed period, 15+ days post ovulation.
