I'm an Australian and that car is basically one of our Commodores. The spanner warning light is an indicator that your car has driven the specified distance before it needs its next regular service. Although it is not essential or detrimental to the car's condition if you decide not to service your car when this light appears, it is recommended by the auto manufacturers as the appropriate time to do so.
Note that if you decide not to service your car when it is recommended and you are still under warranty when your car breaks down or has a problem, you may find that your dealer or auto service centre may not give you the justification you deserve. Either that or you stand a chance of further wear and tear on your auto without a regular lubrication and maintenance schedule.
