The number 1 cylinder is located at the front left of the engine block while FACING the engine. Follow the spark plug wire to the distributor a POW there it is.
The starter is mounted to the bottom of the block next to the bell housing on the radiator side of the engine. It is in the same place on both the V6 and the 4 cylinder engines.
