What is the spiritual meaning of rain?

The word rain in scripture, depending on context, is often used as a metaphor for revelation from God. For instance, in the Jewish Tanakh, the book of Joel prophecied: '...he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.' [Joel 2:23.] This could be viewed as "the rain" which is to come being the advent of Christ; the "former rain" being the teachings of Moses; the "latter rain" would be the Revelation to come after Christ, as promised in so-called 'end time' or 'last days' (e.g., Isaiah, Revelation, etc.) prophecy.
