It's important to the particular church, which scriptures are accepted as official. It's good also, to do some reading on your own and come to your own conclusions.
The Christian church believes that the Holy Scriptures, which include the Old and New Testaments, are the inspired word of God. They are considered to be authoritative and provide guidance for faith and practice. The church emphasizes the importance of studying and interpreting the Scriptures to understand God's will and teachings.

To ignore things that may affect their faith. That makes no sense. They are ignoring God's words. There are many scriptures in the Bible that say true Christians are not under the law at all...no law of any kind. The church claims these scriptures mean the opposite to what they say, and will not discuss them. The church has its traditions, and will uphold them at all costs, even over the Bible..Catholic AnswerIf you are referring to the Catholic Church, Catholics believe that the Catholic Church is what Our Blessed Lord founded to save all men throughout all time. That CHURCH wrote the Scriptures (The New Testament) throughout the first hundred years after Our Blessed Lord left His Church in charge. Then in the late fourth century, the Catholic Church, through Her pope and Bishops drew up the canon of Scripture. The Catholic Church CANNOT ignore any Scriptures, nor, for that matter, can any Scriptures not fit with Tradition. ALL Scripture came out of Tradition, and the Church, by its very commission from God must uphold both, which is why it cannot countenance the protestant heresies which ignore Tradition, and mutilate the Scriptures.

Roman Catholic AnswerBecause it is a law and discipline of the Church. St. Paul specifically points out that celibacy is the better way to live and the Church has ruled on it from a very early point. As to Scripture "backing it up", this is not necessary. The Church predates Scripture, and as the Church is the Body of Christ, and guided by the Holy Spirit, and the Church wrote and approved the Scriptures, it is the Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit working through the Church that make such a ruling, just as the Church ruled on which books are to be in the Scriptures. The question, as stated, presupposes that the Scriptures came before the Church. This is erroneous.
