Pennsylvania was one of the 13 colonies and founded by Quaker William Penn. He got the land grant from the king because the king owed money to Penn's father when he died. William needed to leave England because he was arrested and jailed for his Quaker beliefs. Pennsylvania became one of the leading colonies and Philadelphia one of the major cities of the colonies. It is where the Declaration of Independence was signed and where the constitution was written. Ben Franklin was one of it's major residents and helped create the fire department and school system of Philadelphia. It became a state in 1787. Today it is the 4th largest state.
